Christmas Craft Evening
Despite Storm Barra all Asby WI members who were in a position to attend met in the village hall for their pre-Christmas craft evening. The tutor for the evening was Asby member, Louise Reeve. On previous occasions Louise has demonstrated rainbow dyeing and Christmas wreath-making: her chosen craft this time was corn dollies.
After a brief introduction about corn dollies in general, and how to select suitable heads of ‘corn’ with long stalks which had to be damp, members were shown how to tie a clove hitch – a necessary skill for the evening. Following this Louise deftly demonstrated two methods of making a corn loop. With much trial, error and subsequent rescue by Louise, everyone eventually managed to produce a suitable length which could be curved over to be neatly tied with a bow thus creating an attractive tree decoration.
At the previous month’s annual meeting Pam Cowey and Carol Smith were thanked for their many years’ service on the committee. The remaining committee members were re-elected and were joined by Treasurer-to-be, Lisa Harrington. Annie Johnson was re-appointed President. Retiring Treasurer, Anne Hulse, reported on a satisfactory year with just a slight loss of £67.
The main discussions of the evening resulted in a decision to meet in the afternoon for a year’s trial period, and a further decision to move the WI’s financial year by 6 months to end on 31st March. This would tie in with the new date for the payment of subscriptions that had been introduced nationally.
With the business over members enjoyed a supper of soup, roll and desserts prepared and served by Lisa Harrington, Anne Hulse and Pat Bevan
