Flower Arranging
Speaker: Irene Nelson
Asby WI programme is a varied one and July’s meeting proved to be no exception. The guest speaker, Irene Nelson, came to demonstrate some simple flower arranging which she entitled ‘It’s a Gift’.
However, for her first two demonstrations she broke away from her theme and, using small pieces of flowers left over from a Flower Festival, she created a flowers-and-floating-candles arrangement in a shallow bowl suitable for a dinner table and a Trio of Vases display based on small matching vases but of slightly different sizes. These arrangements were both most effective and easy to do.
Turning to to her theme, and with a commentary of floristry hints, tips and recommendations, Mrs Nelson created three floral gifts. The first was built on a wrapped gift box where it was fixed firmly. As with all the arrangement she took special care to co-ordinate the box colours, with any ribbons and, of course, the flowers used. The second arrangement grew out from a medium-sized gift bag inside which was a block Oasis. Again, the flowers chosen complimented the holder to great effect. The final gift had flowers peeping out of a lidded gift box – the lid carefully propped open at an angle to show the display to its best advantage.
At the close of the demonstration the three gifts and a bunch of remaining flowers were given for the raffle. No need to say that there were four very satisfied members wending their way home with their winnings!
