Book Covering
Asby WI’s printed programme said, ” ‘Book Covering’ by Irene Nelson” which led members to reminisce about having to cover new text books at school with wallpaper or brown parcel paper! And to wonder just what to expect on the evening in question! But they didn’t need to worry.
Mrs Nelson spent her time giving a fascinating demonstration on how to make attractive, decorative, lined covers for books using Bondaweb, Pelmet Vilene and all manner of materials, ribbons, leaves, flowers, and other scraps. The results were most effective and were achieved, in some instances, by using what she called a ‘Bondaweb sandwich’ and, in others, a patchwork technique. Unwanted chiffon scarves were an ideal resource to acquire to enhance the designs.
In addition Mrs Nelson also showed how to make photo-stitched pictures using scanned images which were printed on cheap paper, mounted on Bondaweb and a fabric backing, and then delicately highlighted with appropriate stitching. She had, as an example of this technique, a four seasons wall-hanging she had made and which showed the method to very good advantage.
President Annie Johnson gave the vote of thanks and invited the speaker to judge the competition for an ‘interesting book cover’. The winner was Christine Forrest, second Pam Cowey, and third Pat Bevan. Following refreshments provided by Pam Cowey and Wendy Fairey the monthly business meeting was held and names taken for several future events including the WI northern carol service in Appleby on 13 December.”
