Gift Wrapping
Members of Asby WI welcomed two speakers to their meeting. The first was Margaret Hodgins, WI Adviser, who had been invited to remind members in preparation for the following month’s annual meeting, how nominations for the committee and subsequent election of a president should be carried out. She emphasised that without a president the WI would have to close even though other officers were in post. Following some persuasion she was able to leave the meeting knowing that the committee would be complete, including a new president.
The current president, Susan Renshaw, then welcomed Susan Coyne from ‘Grandma’s Attic’ in Bowness. She came armed with all kinds of ribbons, trimmings, cellophane and other materials to demonstrate some gift wrapping ideas. A steady flow of attractive packets were produced as she showed how to wrap difficult objects such as bottles, plants, and round tins; made a brown paper parcel look enticing; mounted small bottles in a display pack and twisted ribbons into florists’ bows. Jackie Lambert gave thanks on behalf of the members who, several days later, were still talking about the ideas Ms Coyne had demonstrated.
Jackie Smart joined Jackie Lambert as hostess for the evening. The competition for an autumn arrangement in a mug was very well supported. The speaker chose Susan Walker’s as the winner with Dorothy Hayton second. Helen Cooper won the raffle.”
