Annual Lunch
Asby WI celebrated the first month of the year by enjoying a delicious festive meal at Mrs Miller’s, Culgaith. Committee member Carol Smith was responsible for the arrangements which included making sure members’ dietary requirements were all met. As on a previous occasion the meal was very well received indeed.
Rainbow Dyeing
February’s meeting was a hands-on, practical evening led by Louise Reeve (Committee member) with Annie Johnson (President) helping. They introduced the WI to the craft of rainbow dyeing. Each member chose between working with a 100 gram hank of white Aran or darker Gottland wool and up to three dyes from a wide range of colours.
Attired with plastic aprons and rubber gloves members first soaked their hanks in warm soapy water. On well-protected tables, with their fingers they then gradually worked in the chosen dyes. Once the wools were adequately coloured each hank was labelled with the dyer’s name, rolled up in cling-film, and finally coiled into a Cumberland sausage shape.
Then, while Pam Cowey and Susan Walker served refreshments and the business meeting was held, Louise worked hard microwaving the damp results ready for members to take home. Each person had enough rainbow-dyed wool to make a small item such as a beanie, a pair of socks, or a small child’s jumper. In the midst of all the clearing up Louise was thanked for all the hard work she and Annie had put in to what was a very successful and enjoyable evening.
The evening’s guest, Sue Savage, drew the raffle – winner Pat Bevan – and judged the competition for a home-knitted item. The winner was Rachel Forrest, second Maud Holder.
