“Painting in Northern Britain in the 20th Century”
Lecturer: Ed Williams
L.S. Lowry’s works are perhaps the most immediately familiar of any ‘provincial’ British painter, but his enduring popularity has perhaps cast a shadow over those contemporaries active in Northern Britain during the first half of the 20th Century.
This lecture, which can also be offered as a study day, considers those other artists and painters who sought to embrace the new visual language of modernism, but whose approach recognised and embraced the urban and natural landscapes of Northern Britain
Tickets: £9 (members free).
Coffee served 10:15 to 10:45.

“A Keeper”
Graham Norton
Lead: Jackie
Elizabeth Keane returns to Ireland after her mother’s death, intent only on wrapping up that dismal part of her life. There is nothing here for her; she wonders if there ever was. The house of her childhood is stuffed full of useless things, her mother’s presence already fading. And perhaps, had she not found the small stash of letters, the truth would never have come to light.
All welcome – no fees – just come along to listen even if you have not read the book.

Synopsis
Based on one of Agatha Christie’s lesser-known novels, Hallowe’en Party, our film is set in eerie, post-World War II Venice on All Hallows’ Eve. This thrilling mystery features the return of the celebrated sleuth, Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh).
Now retired and living in self-imposed exile in the world’s most glamorous city, Poirot reluctantly attends a seance at a decaying, haunted palazzo. When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets.
Verdict
A Haunting in Venice is Kenneth Branagh’s best Poirot yet

This new play premieres in the Lyttleton Theatre on 4 September.

Synopsis
Jessica Parks is smart, compassionate, a true maverick at the top of her career as an eminent London Crown Court Judge. At work she’s changing and challenging the system one case at a time. But behind the robe, Jessica is a karaoke fiend, a loving wife and a supportive parent.
While managing the impossible juggling act faced by every working mother, an event threatens to throw her life completely off balance. Can she still hold her family upright?
Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl, Saltburn) makes her National Theatre debut as Jessica. Writer Suzie Miller and director Justin Martin reunite following their global phenomenon Prima Facie with this searing examination of modern masculinity and motherhood.

An Old-Fashioned Cumbrian Christmas”
(… which may include some performance!)
Presenter: Dr. Sue Allan
Christmas has always been celebrated in style in Cumbria, it being one of the few times in the year workers got any sort of holiday. And they made the most of it. The season then, as now, was characterised by eating, drinking and making merry. John Housman wrote in 1800 that Christmas continued with feasting and dancing until ‘after the Twelfth Day’, and no work was done at all.
The festive season was ushered in by the Waits, who ‘played their Christmas tune’ beneath the eaves of Dove Cottage, as Wordsworth relates. This seasonal offering from the Lake District and wider Cumbria tells of other Christmas waits, of ‘hunsupping’, Men of Misrule, feasting, carols, merry neets and more from the Early Modern period to the end of the nineteenth century.
(A new speaker for AHG events, Cumbrian writer and academic Dr Sue Allan wrote her PhD thesis on folk songs in the county, and she has also researched Cumbrian folk music, folklore and calendar customs for some decades. She has also written about these traditions in academic publications as well as popular magazines, including Cumbria Life, for which she is a regular contributor.).

Private Detective Cormoran Strike is contacted by a worried father whose son, Will, has gone to join a religious cult in the depths of the Norfolk countryside.
The Universal Humanitarian Church is, on the surface, a peaceable organisation that campaigns for a better world. Yet Strike discovers that beneath the surface there are deeply sinister undertones, and unexplained deaths.
In order to try to rescue Will, Strike’s business partner Robin Ellacott decides to infiltrate the cult and she travels to Norfolk to live incognito amongst them. But in doing so, she is unprepared for the dangers that await her there or for the toll it will take on her.

Marking the centenary of Richard Burton, born 10 November 1925.
Watch the Trailer:

Synopsis
Mr. Burton tells the true story of the relationship between Port Talbot schoolmaster Philip Burton(Toby Jones) and a wild young schoolboy called Richard Jenkins, the son of a wayward drunk. Richard (Harry Lawtey) dreamed of becoming an actor, but his ambitions were in danger of being derailed by a combination of family trouble, the pressure of war, and his own lack of discipline.
Philip Burton recognized the raw talent in his pupil, becoming his tutor, strict taskmaster and eventually his legal guardian.
The film also stars Lesley Manville as Mrs. Burton.

Synopsis
Five-time Olivier Award winner Imelda Staunton (The Crown) joins forces with her real-life daughter Bessie Carter (Bridgerton) for the very first time, playing mother and daughter in Bernard Shaw’s incendiary moral classic.
Vivie Warren is a woman ahead of her time. Her mother, however, is a product of that old patriarchal order. Exploiting it has earned Mrs. Warren a fortune – but at what cost?
Filmed live from the West End, this new production reunites Staunton with director Dominic Cooke, exploring the clash between morality and independence, traditions and progress.
Imelda Staunton and Bessie Carter make a wonderful double act.

James Rebanks
Lead: Pam
One afternoon many years ago, James Rebanks met an old woman on a remote Norwegian island. She lived and worked alone on a tiny rocky outcrop, caring for wild Eider ducks and gathering their down. Hers was a centuries-old trade that had once made men and women rich, but had long been in decline. Still, somehow, she seemed to be hanging on.
Back at home, Rebanks couldn’t stop thinking about the woman on the rocks. She was fierce and otherworldly – and yet strangely familiar. Years passed. Then, one day, he wrote her a letter, asking if he could return. Bring work clothes, she replied, and good boots, and come quickly: her health was failing. And so he travelled to the edge of the Arctic to witness her last season on the island.
