“A Roman Palace in Carlisle?”
Presenter: Andrew Wallis
The first talk of our 2026/7 Winter Programme will feature Andrew Wallis of Crosby Ravensworth, talking about his work on the archaeological excavation at Carlisle Cricket Club. This work was the focus of an exhibition at Tullie House, entitled “Uncovering Roman Carlisle – Where Worlds Meet“, which ran from 7 Feb to 31 May this year.
Andrew has now given this talk to a number of History Groups in Cumbria and has found that the following structure works best:
There will be a 50 minute presentation, followed by a 25 minute break for refreshments and questions to Andrew, as well as an opportunity to purchase Anna Giecco’s rather fine publication – Uncovering Roman Carlisle – Artefacts from a Roman drain – detailing the intaglios, the delicately incised semi-precious stones of Roman rings, which had become detached from their settings by the heat of the bath-house on the excavation site and ended up in its drain!
This break will be followed by a second 20/25 minute presentation by Andrew to end the evening
