A whole day outing to Holme Cultram Abbey, (between Wigton and Silloth). It will be led by Bruce Bennison, who has guided us on a number of visits in the past.
An outline programme for the day is:
09.30 Depart Great Asby
10.45 Arrive Abbeytown – coffee on arrival at the church, toilets available in church, street parking outside the church.
11.15 Tour of St Mary’s, Holm Cultram looking at the excellent heritage display, the remaining architecture and the evidence of the original Cistercian monastery. Include short walk to look at Millgrove (the rebuilt remains of the Abbey Infirmary).
12.30 Lunch at the Abbey
13.30 Depart Abbeytown to drive to St John the Evangelist, Newton Arlosh
13.45 Arrive at St John the Evangelist, parking area off the road by the church.
14.30 Depart Newton Arlosh
· there is an option here to go on to visit St Bride’s Church at Kirkbride (about 5 mins drive from Newton Arlosh, a 12th century church located within a Roman Fort) but I need to double check access etc. We could spend 30 mins there
1500 Depart Kirkbride for Great Asby.
NOTE: The Church Group who will be doing the catering have asked for a donation of £20 per person to cover coffee on arrival, a sandwich lunch and dessert. Alternatively, you may wish to bring your own packed lunch.
