Len Gibson – My Life
A presentation by Len Gibson, commencing at 8pm.
Len will be well known to many of you as the affable father of 3Gs publican, Dave. Now in his 100th year, Len has agreed to join us this evening to tell of some of his many adventures during a long and eventful life.
As a young man he served in the Far East during WWII, was taken prisoner of war, and forced to work on the infamous Burma Railway and Burma Road. Perhaps we’ll hear about his times on “fire watch” in Liverpool, being declared a deserter by the RAF, turning from Pollywog to Shellback, or the black faces of segregation on an American ship. He could recount the tale of his being bombed by the Japanese on a ship 12 miles off the coast of Malaya, stung by scorpions, or having an appendicitis operation without anaesthetic – and then meeting the surgeon, an Australian war hero, decades later at
one of the Queen’s garden parties!
With so many more stories of how he and his fellow prisoners survived at the hands of the Japanese, we’re really not sure where the evening will go as he has so many tales. But they are all interesting and an insight into
how he and some of his friends survived.
Non-members most welcome, small entrance fee of £3 which includes refreshments.
Why not join the History Group? Annual membership just £10 with free entry to all our meetings.
