General Introduction
This is one of a series of ‘flights’ across the Cumbrian parish of Asby, part of the ‘Westmorland Dales’ extension to the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It forms part of a series of videos by members of the Asby History Group which uses Google Earth technology to explore the historic landscape of the parish. This presentation uses and develops the content of a series of educational walks led by Keith Cooper in recent years.
“Asby Gill Walk”
In this 100 minute video, I begin my walk at the bus-shelter in Great Asby before following part of the Priest’s Path, southwards out of the village. This path can be followed all the way to Little Asby, but I turn from it at Burter Gill Barn to descend into Asby Gill. I follow the line of the Gill to return to the western end of Great Asby before walking through part of the village to return to our starting point at the bus-shelter.
On the way, we will look at evidence of historic field use; talk a little about the use of fieldhouses and lime kilns; inspect a Late Iron Age site and examine some of the geological features in the landscape
