Asby Parish Council is a local authority that makes decisions on behalf of the residents of Great Asby, Little Asby, and the surrounding area. It is the level of government closest to the community, with Eden District Council above it in the hierarchy.
The Parish Council aims to improve facilities and services for the parish and considers matters referred to it by local residents, Eden District Council, Cumbria County Council, and central Government.[1]
The Parish Council has duties which it must carry out by law, and powers that it can use if it chooses. The Government is encouraging parish councils to deliver more services and play a greater role in the community.
Some of the matters that Asby Parish Council is involved with are:
- Planning applications
- Highways maintenance
- Housing provision
- Street lighting
- Broadband
- The burial ground
- Play areas and village greens
- Litter
- Public seating
- Local bus service
To help carry out its duties the Parish Council raises a ‘precept’ – a sum of money collected through your council tax. In the autumn of each year the Council reviews its plans for the following year and agrees a budget and precept for that year.
