“Asby Parish: New Reflections and Observations on Aspects of its Historic Landscape, Archaeology and Minor Place-names”
Presenter: Keith Cooper
We’ll be looking for an early medieval summer milking place; revisiting a detectorist’s find of a 10th century metal hoard close to Asby Scar; exploring the mysteriously-named Tympany Gill, adjacent to Copper Mines Lane; taking a look at a very ‘busy’ landscape on Grange Hall’s land, with a number of ‘longhouse sites’ of unknown date; and piecing together the creation of Gaythorne’s estate, using the charters which granted land there to York’s Hospital of St Leonard/St Peter in the 13th century to look for the boundary markers listed in those charters that can still be found in the landscape.
