The Role of the Manor Court
Managing Community Responsibilities and Conflict in Late Medieval and Early Modern Asby
Presenter: Keith Cooper
The ‘Court Baron’ was the lord’s court for all matters relating to the management of his manor. Consequently, it was responsible for making the various by-laws, or ‘paines’, for governing the way in which tenants were to use, and have access to, the resources of the manor and also responsible for ensuring that those ‘paines’ were complied with. The ‘Court Baron’ also acted as a tribunal for the lord’s tenants to bring private disputes against each other.
This talk will use records from the ‘Court Baron’ of the manor of Asby Winderwath, together with material drawn from elsewhere in Cumbria, to explore how these courts – in the late Medieval and early Modern period – defined and managed tenants’ responsibilities, as well as resolving some of their conflicts with each other.
