Synopsis
As the daughter of wealthy and aspirant parents, Beatrix suffered from social constraint, but even before she published Peter Rabbit, she channelled her considerable intellectual energy into drawing and biological research. Once financially independent, she concentrated upon breeding Herdwick sheep and upon writing and illustrating more children’s books. Successful in all these fields, she led a simple life in the Lake District but accumulated a considerable estate of Cumbrian farms which she eventually bequeathed to the National Trust, under the influence of Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley.
This lecture shows the breadth of her watercolours of literary, biological and archaeological subjects, draws attention to the influences upon her and outlines her life
