Event Details

Led by:  Michael Mullett.

Michael Mullett, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Lancaster, will lead a tour of ‘Historic Penrith’.

Michael has completed four volumes of a new and comprehensive history of the town. Those who wish, may care to look at them prior to the visit; especially Book II (‘Penrith under the Tudors’), Book III (‘the Stuart Century’), and Book IV (‘Penrith in the Eighteenth Century’). All are published by Bookcase of Carlisle.

Michael explains that because Penrith was built in stone from quite an early date, it was not subject to the devastating fires which swept through the wooden buildings of many medieval towns. Therefore. it retains its basic ‘bone structure’ of medieval open trading places, linked by winding lanes.

More details will follow closer to the date, but the plan will be to meet in Great Asby at 1pm on September 4th, with the aim of beginning the tour of Penrith at St Andrew’s church at 2pm. Duration approximately one hour.

All welcome, AHG members and non-members.

ATG Activities

We will be working with local landowners to identify small areas of land that can be used to plant trees or hedges. Occasional requests will go out to members, seeking volunteers to survey areas of land to assess the age and health of trees and to identify possible planting areas, as well as to take part in planting trees and hedges. These activities will normally be scheduled to last for no more than three hours.

The Tree Group has insurance to cover members carrying out these activities.

COVID Policy (Feb.2022)

Unfortunately Covid-19 has not gone away, and we still want everyone to feel safe whilst being able to enjoy the film.

  • We use ‘cabaret-style’ seating around suitably spaced tables.
  • We recommend that you continue to wear a face covering when moving around the village hall, though this may be removed whilst you are seated.
  • It would also be appreciated if you could complete an antigen (lateral flow) test before attending.  (We are more than happy to refund your ticket should your test unfortunately prove positive.)
