Dry Stone Walls

Dry Stone Walls

Our Heritage Workshops are a great way for you to discover more about vulnerable man-made historical features in the Westmorland Dales.  They will help you to develop recording skills to carry out condition surveys.

Dry stone walls are a key characteristic of the Westmorland Dales. They have been part of the landscape for hundreds of years serving as boundaries, field markers and for farming. This workshop will focus on types and condition of field walls across the area with an introduction to recording techniques.
The day will be a mixture of indoor and outdoor fieldwork.

Background

The Westmorland Dales Hidden Landscapes Partnership is an exciting new project supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. We have begun the planning phase of our project which aims to unlock and reveal the hidden heritage of the Westmorland Dales, enabling more people to connect with, enjoy and benefit from this inspirational landscape.

We are now 6 months into our development phase so have been busy setting up the scheme and getting out to meet people. All this will lead to a round 2 bid to Heritage Lottery in July 2018 and, assuming this is successful, the main delivery phase of the scheme from January 2019 to December 2022.

ATG Activities

We will be working with local landowners to identify small areas of land that can be used to plant trees or hedges. Occasional requests will go out to members, seeking volunteers to survey areas of land to assess the age and health of trees and to identify possible planting areas, as well as to take part in planting trees and hedges. These activities will normally be scheduled to last for no more than three hours.

The Tree Group has insurance to cover members carrying out these activities.

COVID Policy (Feb.2022)

Unfortunately Covid-19 has not gone away, and we still want everyone to feel safe whilst being able to enjoy the film.

  • We use ‘cabaret-style’ seating around suitably spaced tables.
  • We recommend that you continue to wear a face covering when moving around the village hall, though this may be removed whilst you are seated.
  • It would also be appreciated if you could complete an antigen (lateral flow) test before attending.  (We are more than happy to refund your ticket should your test unfortunately prove positive.)
