A visit to the pele tower at Clifton Hall and to Clifton church, led by Sara Holliday.
All that remains of Clifton Hall, a fortified manor house dating from the 14th century, is the pele tower. It does not have the usual massive walls, so it is thought it was built in the late 16th Century when the danger from the Scots was less than in previous centuries. It is currently in the care of English Heritage.
Just across the road is St Cuthbert’s Church which is built on a site which has probably contained a church for over a thousand years – tradition has it that this is one of the resting places of St Cuthbert’s remains. More information may be found on the Visit Cumbria website.
