A Month of Activities
Several years ago Asby WI agreed to make January its ‘holiday’ month as weather conditions were making it difficult for speakers and members to get to that month’s meetings. However, that hasn’t stopped WI activities from taking place at the beginning of 2017.
Firstly, five members and two guests travelled to Farfield Mill in Sedburgh for lunch and to see the Textile Art Exhibition. The artistry and technical excellence of the quilts on display from textile artists from all over the world was breathtaking and much admired by the whole group.
Secondly, an almost full complement of members gathered for a celebratory New Year lunch at Mrs Miller’s in Culgaith.
Thirdly(!!) the Knit and Natter group continued to meet fortnightly and, enthused by there being a fifth Monday in the month, even added an extra get-together. But, there were added reasons for doing this – the celebration of ‘significant’ birthdays for two members and the wedding in the week before of one of them.
Eleven ladies met at the home of the recently elected President who had made a splendid birthday cake with candles – adapted by sleight of hand as appropriate for each birthday girl – which then morphed into a wedding cake by the substitution of a knitted bride and groom! The celebrations were completed with cups of tea, cheesecake, and, of course, the ‘birth-ding’ cake which, as it happened, the groom, who had come to collect his wife, was also able to enjoy.
So much for a ‘holiday’ month!
