Craft Evening
Asby WI’s final meeting of 2016 in Asby Village Hall was very well-attended; members also welcomed a newcomer to the village as a guest. Matters during the business part of the evening included arrangements for a visit to a textiles exhibition at Farfield Mill, Sedbergh and the WI lunch at Mrs Miller’s, Culgaith. Members were encouraged to invite friends and neighbours who are interested in sewing of any kind to come to the meeting in February when Marjorie Bidgway will be giving a talk entitled ‘The Humble Sewing Needle’
The evening’s visiting speaker was Barbara Colbear who came armed with ready-prepared kits of materials for members to make a Christmas tree decoration After a brief demonstration each member worked meticulously with neatly folded fabrics and pins to cover a polystyrene egg until gaily patterned ‘fir cones’ were completed and ready to hang. For a number of members this was a relaxing activity following a busy day of Christmas preparations while others found the precise work a little more demanding! Nevertheless, everyone was duly satisfied with their achievements.
Mrs Colbear judged the monthly competition for a flower brooch for which there was a good number of entries: winner Pat Bevan, second Dorothy Hayton. Pat was also hostess for the evening with Rachel Forrest. There were two raffle winners: Maud Holder and June Sowerby.
